We all learn in different ways. And when we study in a new country, we need to look at and think about different ways of learning.

Getting the Result
Student 1
What mark did you get?
Student 2
I got a six.
Student 3
I got a four, but I think I should get a higher mark. What did you get?
Student 1
I got a five, but I'm not happy with this result.
Student 3
What's different? Why did she give you a higher mark? It looks the same to me.
Student 2
Why don't you go and talk to her?
Marlyn
Hello Morgan, Emilio. What seems to be the problem?
Morgan
We are not happy with our marks. Why did we get such a low mark?
Marlyn
Well let's have a look at the criteria sheet, and can you show me the areas where you think that there's a problem?
Emilio
I don't understand the difference between criteria sheet and what I wrote.
Marlyn
The criteria sheets are absolutely critical. Because it's on those criteria sheets where we tell the students how to approach the task. If they're not satisfied with their results, then maybe it's because they've not approached the learning task the way we had intended on the criteria sheet.
Morgan
Can you please look at this paper again?
Emilio
Yeah, mine too.
Marlyn
All right. Before that happens though, I need you to go home, look at the criteria sheet again, mark where you think there's a problem, and also to write some comments. I can then give your paper to the lecturer. but what you do need to realise is that there is always the slight possibility that the mark could go down as well as go up, or it could stay exactly as it is now. OK Morgan? Emilio?
Emilio
In my country, we don't have criteria sheets or marks. We just get a number there. I have no idea about the criteria sheet. I've never seen it before.
Morgan
In my country, students can talk to teachers about their marks and even argue about their final marks, so this is a different way of doing things.

Approaching the Task
Rena
Hi, How can I help you?
Wayan
Hi,
Rena
Um, is that an assignment that you have there?
Wayan
Oh, yes. I have this, but I don't know what to do.
Rena
Ok. Please sit down and we can talk about it.
Wayan
Thank you.
Rena
Tell me. How are you going in the subject?
Wayan
I have an assignment but I haven't started yet because my tutor didn't tell me what to do.
Rena
All right, well we can look at the question together and talk about the question, but before we start, can you tell me what the lecturer or the tutor said to you during lecture time about the assignment.
Wayan
Oh I don't remember. Can you help me?
Rena
What I can do is I can try to help you understand the key words in the question and we can look at that together, but you may also want to go to consultation with your tutor to talk about the theories and the content that goes into this assignment so that you understand what you need to do to do the assignment. OK? Let's have a look at the question first.
Wayan
In my country, we don't have to be so independent. First, the teachers, they will tell all of the students what to do and where to get the answers, but here it's all completely different. The students have to figure it out by themselves. And, I don't know where to start.

Lecturer's Expectations
Merril
When I set a task, I expect students to really read the tasks and that they understand what the topic involves. If they don't understand it, they need to come and see me to talk about it and we can talk about the best learning strategies to use.
Tony
Well, I explain in detail what I want from a student in an exam as a precursor is understanding all of the information. If students listen carefully in lectures and workshops, apply a learning strategy, then they'll know what they need to study for in my exams.
Miska
For an assignment, I go through the criteria sheet before they start because I want them to understand the level of critical thinking required. For example, there's a difference between a four and a seven. For a four, you might have answered the question, whereas for a seven, you've critically analysed it.
Sally
Email's a really good way for students to ask questions. Especially if there's no time in tutorials or lectures.

Types of Learning Styles
Morgan
I want to know if I'm doing it right so I like to ask my tutor, but sometimes she doesn't answer my questions.
Wayan
Yeah, I know what he means because I went to the language and learning advisor before to get some help with my assignment. They said that I needed to get some ideas for myself first and then talk to my lecturer.
Yumiko
Well, I like to work alone and figure it out by myself. I read and listen to learn and I would do that before I look for any help.
Emilio
I think lectures are a good way to understand assignments, but I don't always go to lecturers for advice. I prefer to talk it over with my friends.
Lia
Like these students, I had to learn about learning. When I was first at uni, I was surprised because I had to work out the rules for myself. I think everybody has a different answer so you need to work out the style of learning that is best for you. Ciao!
