Ramiro
Asking questions is not always easy.
Lia
And if English is not your first language, it can be even more difficult.
Ramiro
Yeah, even getting a coffee is hard.
Lia
And then in English class, in Australia, it is very important to ask questions. Let’s take a look.
Teacher
Has anyone ever had a lamington? Candy? Have you ever had a lamington?
Student 1
Yes.
Teacher
Can you tell us about your experience or where you had it or what it was like?
Student 2
Excuse me, could you please tell us what lamington means?
Teacher
Mmmmh, lamington. Maybe someone else can tell us what lamington means?

Students Feelings (1:19 - 2:27)
Lia
Mike, how do you feel when your teacher asks you a question?
Mike
Actually, because I speak very slowly, sometimes I feel very uncomfortable.
Lia
And Bora, how about you?
Bora
I’m nervous, very nervous.
Lia
And, how do you feel?
Candy
Yes, I’m nervous too. And sometimes, I need to have more time to think (about) the wording and to try to explain the question.
Lia
You, know when the teacher asks you a question, how do you feel?
Badr
Sometimes I feel bad about this because if I don’t know the answer, I feel very nervous. I want to know the answer, the answer for the question.
Bora
I can’t speak English very quickly so it makes me very nervous.
Badr
Actually, I don’t know why the teacher asks you questions when they already know the answer!

Why Do Teachers Ask Questions in Class? (2:28 - 3:01)
Louise Hensby
I ask questions because I want to know if the students understand what I’m asking – that they understand me.
Victoria Jeboult
I like to ask them questions to give them opportunities to practise speaking. When they answer questions, they are practising speaking.
Darren Brookes
I want to show students that in Australia, asking questions is a really good way to learn. There’s a lot of learning in asking questions.

Asking Your Teachers Questions? (3:01 to End)
Teacher
So are there any questions? Yes? No?
Narrator
How do you feel when you want to ask a question?
Candy
Actually, sometimes I just stay quiet and wait for someone to help me ask the same question.
Mike
I am afraid that my question is a silly question. So I’m afraid. Sometimes, I just keep quiet.
Bora
Yes, I worry about my grammar. So, ah, maybe another student will not understand my question.
Badr
At home, in my country, most people ask a lot of questions and also here, because how can I learn if I don’t ask any questions?
Teacher
I really like it when they [students] do ask questions. It shows me that they are interested, that they are listening, that they are having fun, and I can check that they can understand.
Ramiro
So you see. Students have different feelings about asking questions in class.
Lia
Do you feel the same as some of these students? Don’t worry. The teachers know that it’s hard.
Ramiro
The more questions that you ask, the easier it will become.
Lia
So, if you want to improve your English, then have fun in class. Take the risk and try a new way of learning. Ciao!
Ramiro
Zai chen!
Lia
Sayonara!
Ramiro
Auf Wiedersehen, Adios and Masalama!
Lia
How about just “Goodbye”?
Ramiro
See you next time.
