Reading widely is a lot like shopping. Looking for new clothes for a special party. You are trying things on but not buying anything. It’s just like keeping a record in your head. - Seb

Yes. Can you tell me a little bit more about your assignment topic? Let’s start by looking at the key words in your topic. When students come to the help desk, we like to start with their topic and we look at the key words that are in that topic and use those to search the library catalogue and the databases and the Internet. Reading for an essay is like shopping, because you have to collect so much information from books, from journals and from the Internet. Most importantly, you have to record that information. So, I use a system of index cards. - Alinho
Index cards? Why can’t I just copy and paste the reference details into my paper? - Helen
Well you can, if that system works for you. The most important thing is that that system provides you with accurate citations for your essay. And you know, that you must always acknowledge the ideas that you used to support the opinions that you put forward in your essays. - Banner at 4:26

I know. We can’t just copy that’s what they call plagiarism. - Mami
I remember one of the first assignments I did. I just copied straight from my reading and was so shocked when I got no marks for that. I didn’t really understand how serious they were about plagiarism. - Ramiro
Writing your references isn’t so difficult to learn. You can go to a Language and Learning Adviser Workshop or look for the right style guide through Blackboard, or ask at the library. - Lia
Referencing your research might be new for you and part of doing a good job is talking to the right people that can help you. - Ramiro
And don’t forget to read and research as many different sources as possible and use these sources to answer your assignment questions. - Lia
