It is very important that candidates prepare for the IELTS test. Candidates certainly find it helpful to familiarise themselves with the format of the IELTS test. One way is to do a practice test. Practicing beforehand will help you be better prepared.

Improving your skills in everyday opportunities:

Speak English with family and friends as much as possible
Listen to English speaking programs on the radio, TV and movies
Read newspapers and other media as much as possible.
Write in English to practice your writing skills
Remember timing is essential so ensure you are taking into consideration the time it takes you.
Ensure you are familiar with the test, the rules and ensure you have a good nights sleep before. If you are travelling a distance, try and stay somewhere close to the test venue or fly in the night before.
Find the test venue and familarise yourself with the location before the test day.

Practice and familarity with the test is essential to succeed.

IELTS is no more difficult than any other exam. The questions are straightforward and designed to assess how well you can use your English – not to trick you or test your opinions. As with any exam, IELTS requires thorough preparation.

Also, remember that there is no pass or fail in IELTS. The results are reported on a 9-band scale (1 being the lowest, 9 being the highest). This scale has remained consistent for over 20 years.

The score you need is determined by the requirements of your visa or the institution/ organisation to which you are applying. Always remember to check what score you need before you take the test.

You are not expected to change your accent for the IELTS test. Instead, focus on speaking clearly and at a natural pace so that the examiner can understand you. Practising your English every day and listening to different native speaker accents will help you to pronounce difficult words more clearly.

IELTS has official practice materials to help you understand the format of the test and the types of questions.

The two different volumes of the Official IELTS Practice Materials are available for purchase at the QUT IELTS Test Centre reception.

Both volumes of the practice material offer samples of the Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking modules with sample answers and Examiner comments.

Vol. 1 Official IELTS Practice Materials (with CD). The CD in Vol. 1 offers samples of the Listening test
Vol. 2 Official IELTS Practice Materials (with DVD). The DVD in Vol. 2 shows candidates taking the Speaking test.

The Official IELTS Practice Materials Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are the only IELTS practice materials endorsed by the IELTS partners.

Each individual volume costs $35.00 or both for just $60.00.

You can pre-pay for the Official IELTS Practice Materials (Volume 1 or Volume 2) by paying through QUTPay or you can also pay at the QUT IELTS Test Centre reception by credit card or money order. Money orders must be made out to the "QUT IELTS test centre".

Once you have paid, you can either collect the practice materials in person from the QUT IELTS Test Centre reception, or alternatively the practice materials can be posted to you (postage must be paid through QUTPay).

Once you have obtained the receipt, please forward the receipt to ielts.enquiries@qut.edu.au and advise whether you will collect your practice materials or wish to have them posted.

If you wish to have your practice materials posted, please ensure you advise your postal address in the email that includes your receipt. Once the centre has confirmed payment, the practice materials will be posted the next working day.
